Series sell inside your emails. Here's how.
Hey there!
Can we talk about that moment when you sit down to write your newsletter and suddenly... your mind goes completely blank?
cue tumbleweed rolling across your desk
You stare at the screen, panic rising, and then think "Oh! I'll just tell them about ALL my books!" Next thing you know, you're cramming every single book you've ever written into one email like you're playing newsletter Tetris. And it ends up being too long and too overwhelming.
I get it. I used to do the exact same thing.
Here's the thing - readers don't want the whole buffet at once. They want a carefully curated taste that makes them hungry for more.
Think about it: when's the last time you bought six books from the same author in one go?
What if instead of overwhelming your readers with everything at once, you focused on one book per email? Give it room to breathe. Share the little details that made you fall in love with your characters. Tell the behind-the-scenes story of how that plot twist came to be. Or just start to connect with your readers for the very reasons they're reading your books. Life and love.
Not only does this approach give you WAY more content ideas (hello, endless email topics!), but it also lets your readers really connect with each story individually.
Quick example: Instead of listing all your books with their blurbs, you could share how your cat walking across your keyboard actually inspired that hilarious scene in Chapter 3 of your latest novel.
Or if you write thrillers, and this may or may not be from my personal inbox of ideas, when you watched the latest Apple thriller, The Gorge, thinking it was more romance and less terrifying, and then realizing it was more terrifying and a tiny bit romantic and grabbing a hold of your dog only for your dog to skootch away slowly leaving you watching behind your hands...and how that might have gotten written into a book, adding in a real, live human man who the dog skootched over to who was equally as terrified...!
Wouldn't that be more fun to write (and read)? And then you loop the story right back around to that one book you were selling in this email?
I'm working with a client right now to create 4-6 emails per month and we're using her bestselling series that is 11 books long. Every other week is Book Club and we're highlighting the next book in the series. This is giving us built in content for nearly 6 months. When we're done this series, we'll move on to the next series. That singular focus creates reader tunnel vision. We're getting great open and click metrics and selling some books along the way. Books that have been published for a few years.
Pro Tip: Don't assume your list has read anything of yours. It's impossible to say how they all got there. Sell your backlist if you have one and if you don't, keep your emails short and sweet and consistent and focused. Don't be tempted to join every swap that comes your way!
